Latest Defence Intelligence update on the situation in Ukraine – 26 October 2023.įind out more about Defence Intelligence's use of language: The complete package is probably still in the negotiation stage, and this has perhaps been a central topic of discussion during recent high-level Russian visits to North Korea. The specifics of what Russia has committed to provide to North Korea in exchange remain uncertain. These depots support Russian military operations in Ukraine,” the UK MoD added. “Despite Russia’s official rejection of recent reports, it is almost certain that North Korean munitions have reached ammunition depots in western Russia. The ministry further emphasized that if North Korea continues its current rate and scale of military-related shipments, it could soon rival significant suppliers such as Iran and Belarus in significance. This development positions North Korea to potentially emerge as one of Russia’s notable foreign arms suppliers. The British Defense Ministry’s October 26 update on the situation in Ukraine claimed the presence of North Korean munitions in western Russian ammunition depots, which serve as vital support for Russian military activities in Ukraine. Additionally, Moscow has received supplies from North Korea and is actively procuring Soviet-era shells. While Europe encounters challenges in providing ammunition to Ukraine, Russian factories are projected to deliver an estimated 2 million shells next year. Russia Securing Munitions Through Its Allies In this context, Kyiv may encounter challenges in procuring and supplying weapons and international support. Meanwhile, there are concerns that the conflict in Ukraine is receding from the spotlight as the situation in the Middle East escalates, with Western countries focusing more on events in Israel. Simultaneously, NATO urged its member states to overcome protectionist inclinations and reach a consensus on a unified standard for artillery ammunition to boost production. Some EU member states also pursued independent procurement programs to bolster their industrial capabilities, mirroring Ukraine’s efforts. However, these statistics do not encompass all shipments made since the onset of the full-scale Russian invasion, and some countries might have acquired ammunition from sources outside the EU or not divulged their deliveries. The report further mentioned that the cost of ammunition has risen since the initiative’s launch, potentially jeopardizing the current budget’s adequacy to meet its objectives. Nonetheless, a few countries, including the Baltic states, Germany, the Netherlands, and Poland, have confidentially disclosed their contribution of approximately 300,000 to 400,000 rounds of ammunition, primarily under the EU initiative.Īdditionally, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, and non-EU member state Norway have committed €52 million for future production set to commence next year. At the same time, the United States, which aims to boost its annual projectile production to approximately 1 million by 2024, has urged the EU to intensify its endeavors, according to the report.ĮU member states have been cautious in disclosing precise information regarding the resources they have contributed and the particulars of their contracts. Multiple EU member states have discreetly requested the EU’s foreign policy department to consider extending the contract deadline. With the current volume of contracts signed, there is a looming risk of failing to achieve the target. However, information gleaned from sources and documents examined by Bloomberg suggests that this endeavor has, to date, only fulfilled approximately 30% of the intended quantity. 13,000 Ukrainian Tanks & Other Military Vehicles Destroyed In Special Military Ops – Russian MoD SaysĪs outlined in the approved plans earlier this year, the EU committed to supplying Ukraine with artillery ammunition over 12 months, starting with existing stockpiles and subsequently utilizing joint procurement agreements and expanded industrial production. The European Union is reportedly struggling to meet its target of delivering one million artillery shells to Ukraine by March 2024, having achieved only 30% of the goal.

Imagine that your protagonist has just turned into a statue. Write the scene of your character's arrival. Now send your character to his or her grumpy grandmother's house for a visit. Give us an idea of who your character is by describing only the first 60 seconds of the character's day. Feel free to give him or her any other characteristics you'd like. Give your character the hair and laugh of person 1, the face and bedroom of person 2, and the wardrobe and mannerisms of person 3. Take us through a written walk down your street and to your favorite place through the eyes of somebody else. After all, it's all about creation in any volume, right? The 30-Day Writing Challenge Day 1 The best part is that you can write as much or as little as you'd like without pressure and without having to feel bad about it. This is the 30-Day Writing Challenge, where we've provided creative writing exercises for every day of the month. That's why we've created a less intense alternative to 50,000 words in 30 days. Writing for a few minutes every day doesn't sound so scary, does it? The trick is that it all adds up. (Like, I guess one date wouldn't hurt, and it might be fun to post that I'm "in a relationship" on Facebook.) In reality, writing doesn't have to be so intense. Luckily, the ability to produce a high volume of good writing doesn't just happen overnight. I'd still like to write every day it's just that producing such a high volume in such a short amount of time is what sends single girls like me running and screaming. I get all of it.Įven so, I would like to see my family for more than 30 minutes after I get home from work, and- sue me-but going to new restaurants with my friends is, like, the Olympic sport of my life. Okay, so I know the idea is that even moms and full-time employees can find time, that prioritizing writing over other things is important to nurture your artistic self, and that fitting writing into your day every day is what makes a writer, well, a writer. So forgive me for not jumping at the opportunity to write 50,000 words in a month. I'm the person who researches the restaurant ahead of time and still stares at the menu long after everyone has decided what to order. I've had three separate Facebook accounts, over 10 different email addresses (five of which are currently active), and I've dyed my hair more colors than I could count on both my fingers and my toes. I find it difficult to choose a movie because I think two hours is too long to focus on the same story. I don't know about you, but I'm afraid of commitment. But perhaps the safest and the most effective is the spike trap. “You’ll start losing traction and grip on the road,” he said. All systems are measured from the first spike to the last, i.e. Richmond County Deputy Scott Usry said it takes only a few minutes after he parks his car to get out, swing the Stop Sticks across the road and get cover, but there is an art to it, he admitted as he demonstrated the “arc and swing” motion he uses to get the sticks in place quickly. Not all chases allow the time or space to use the spike strips. The hardest part is getting ahead of the car and setting up in time. The greatest difference, according to Columbia County sheriff’s Lt. On a few plastic trail markers, someone did Sharpy in a trail name. Then you often have to look at the color of the metal "blazes" hammered on to tree trunks to know which trail you're on. Trail inter-sections are numbered on the map, and numbered on the ground, so if you come to a junction with a big "2" on it, you have to look at your map to see that this is where you are. Odd thing about these trails is that the signs are mostly coded. The breeze wouldn't be so nice if I was trying to paddle a canoe out on one of the lakes, but it was wonderful up there in the hills. The high was in the low 80s and there was a nice breeze. Very pleasant day of hiking, even without the big open views. That's the main difference I've noticed in hiking here in the mid-South versus out West: Thick trees, and fewer expansive vistas. In fact, even though I could only rarely see any roads, I often heard the sound of trucks or motorcycles roaring quite nearby. The forest cover is so thick that you can't see far in any direction. There were no other cars when I parked, but 2 or 3 other cars when I left, so I know I parked legally.Īlthough this was another "Land Between the Lakes" hike, I could not see any lakes on this hike. There will also be the remains of roads heading in several directions near this loop, but I'm pretty sure those roads are for authorized vehicles only (although they are not signed that way-they're just kind of narrow and bumpy). After about 200 yards, the road will reach a little loop at the end. When the road makes a sharp right towards Boswell Landing, you should see a dirt/gravel road signed for Fort Henry parking, more or less straight for your direction of travel. Take the second right (the second paved road on the right), which will be signed towards Boswell Landing. At the south Welcome Center, turn left (away from the Welcome Center), to the west. 79, take "The Trace" north from 79 (it is signed for access to Land Between the Lakes). The trailhead for the Fort Henry trails is on a spur road off of Fort Henry Road. This area was instead known as "Land Between the Rivers." In fact, Fort Henry, which used to overlook the Tennessee River, was submerged by the reservoir that pooled behind Kentucky Dam. Of course, Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley did not exist at the time. The Union victory there gave them control of the lower Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers, which were important transit ways for western and central Kentucky and Tennessee. There's a network of trails collectively known as "Fort Henry Trails." They're all associated with the Fort Henry area, which was an important early Civil War battlefield. Professional adds the ability to create locked-down VMs for BYOD scenarios, the ability to configure private networks, the ability to import OVF virtual machines, and support for Perl-based scripting. Oddly, the $50 upgrade nets you Fusion 5 Professional - there is no upgrade to the standard edition. I have no such hardware to test whether this feature works as advertised, but this capability might be handy in Windows-dominated workplaces that use Windows-only peripherals - which I suspect is a small number. However, these are minor conveniences not worth $50.įusion 5 promises to run some Windows-only USB and Bluetooth hardware not supported by the Mac and to make them accessible to the OS X host. What you can't do is use the pinch and expand gestures, the rotate gestures, or any of the other gestures that the Apple hardware is designed for (and that work in OS X Mountain Lion) and that Windows 8 supports.Īs an application, Fusion 5 works with a few native OS X Mountain Lion features, such as better supporting Launchpad for access to Windows applications and passing notifications in the guest OS to Mountain Lion's new Notifications Center. Sure, you can perform mouse actions on a Magic Trackpad, Magic Mouse, or built-in MacBook trackpad, but Fusion 4 allowed the same. The right approach would be to use a consistent modifier-key combination to represent the Windows key.Īlso, I was very disappointed to discover that I could not use Apple's gesture-capable hardware in the Windows 8 VM. Some shortcuts add Shift if there's an existing Mac shortcut that would conflict, while others do not it's a guessing game as to whether to hold Shift (and holding Shift when it's not required doesn't work). In Fusion, you use Command-Shift-C for the charms bar and Command-D for the Windows Desktop. For example, on a PC, Windows-C opens the charms bar and Windows-D switches to the Windows Desktop. The shortcuts are not consistent, so using them is more hassle than just sticking to the mouse. I saw no differences running OS X Mountain Lion, and for Windows 8, all I got was a few Windows 8-specific shortcut keys such as to open the charms bar or switch to the Windows Desktop. When you run OS X Mountain Lion or Windows 8 on Fusion 5, you don't get much more than you do running them on Fusion 4. Because Windows 8 is really Windows 7 plus the Metro environment and OS X Mountain Lion is a minor revision to OS X Lion, telling that little fib when you install either OS into a new VM works fine - and saves you the $50 upgrade cost to Fusion 5. You just had to tell Fusion you were running Windows 7 or OS X Lion, respectively. The big selling point is support for Windows 8 and OS X Mountain Lion VMs, but Fusion 4 also supported these OSes as VMs. I'm rethinking that decision with Fusion 5.įirst, there's very little useful in the new version - certainly nothing that justifies the $50 upgrade cost. VMware Fusion 5: Few new features, and not very savvy ones at that Since 2011's version 4, Fusion has been my tool of choice for running Windows on my Mac. Worse, for both products, this marks the second time in a row their companies have offered pricey minor updates - a behavior that users should not support. Is either worth the $50 upgrade fee? I don't think so. For example, both companies note AirPlay mirroring support as a new feature when, in fact, this OS X Mountain Lion capability requires no changes in an application to support it - anything on your screen is mirrored, no matter how old it is. Worse, both companies' marketing sometimes implies they offer more than they do. For example, both products' previous versions also run on OS X Mountain Lion and support Windows 8 and Mountain Lion clients, if not quite as smoothly as the new versions do. Note that both VMware and Parallels offer enterprise editions that provide the kind of policy management of Windows VMs that IT often imposes on actual Windows PCs.īut if you read the promos carefully, you'll notice not much is actually new. New Fusion licenses also run $50, while new Parallels licenses cost $80. Both cost $50 for an upgrade from a recent version. Both Fusion 5 and Parallels Desktop 8 extend the host support to OS X Mountain Lion and the client VM support to Windows 8 and OS X Mountain Lion. Those products are VMware's Fusion and Parallels Desktop, which let you run Windows, OS X, Linux, and Chrome OS virtual machines on OS X hosts. 26 but available for download by developers and Microsoft partners) come updates to two products that bring the two OSes together. About a month after Apple released OS X Mountain Lion and two weeks after Microsoft finalized Windows 8 (not shipping until Oct. It's a rare year that sees updates to both OS X and Windows, but 2012 marks such an occasion. But when you’re young, you don’t do that. The eventual state of loving music should be an understanding that all music is expression. The whole mission in music is, if you have biases, to use them to get some better place and then to shed them. Things that are, I think, pretty telling biases of their own. And then I get to punk rock and stuff, and like everybody else you start rejecting, when you get into punk rock, you start to take in a lot of what I would call received thinking, shorter, faster, better, don’t be pretentious. So when I finally did see the movie in the seventh grade, I was like “Where is my favorite song?” You wouldn’t know anything about that if you were a fan of Rocky Horror, but the song “Superheroes” on the soundtrack album seems to occupy a very important place, but it was cut from the film. But I got the album and I would try to piece together the story from listening to it. And the thing is, I hadn’t seen the movie. So all you had to do was circulate a big enough petition among your friends to get this going. Sometimes there would be three Rocky Horror songs in the top ten, because the top ten was done by a petition. But the Rocky Horror Picture Show, owing to the efforts of the Rocky Horror fans, in Southern California would routinely get one or more songs on Doctor Demento’s weekly top ten. And there had been some other musicals- Bugsy Malone is an almost forgotten 1970s movie where children played these gangsters. When I was in the sixth grade, I discovered the Rocky Horror Picture Show via Doctor Demento. That and the Music Man, I was super into when I was four and five years old. This is the music that begins my music listening career. One of the first records I owned was a small label version of Fiddler on the Roof. John Darnielle: I’ve been listening to musicals my whole life. Do you want to tell me how sonically you distinguish this one from the others? Why not just lean into it?ĪD: You mentioned being influenced by Godspell! and I do think that this record has more of that kind of theatrical, musical feel to it. So it was a challenge for me, and since I have three novels under my belt, I was feeling my oats. But the task of telling a story that goes from point A to point B in a tellable knowable way, that’s more of an opera sensibility. It’s not that it’s a greater craft or anything. To actually tell a story, it feels very risky, you know, because there are a lot of people out there telling a lot of great stories on television and in movies, in books, and that requires of you, a sort of craft that don’t normally bring to making a record. It was a bunch of little interconnected stories and characters.īut a rock opera tells a story. People have pitched me to make it a musical before. People like the term “concept album.” It’s sort of like a bet hedging of the rock opera, right? Because why not just go all the way? All Hail West Texas is not a rock opera. For instance, the Mountain Goats added a second person and then seven years later, we added a third one.īut the “so-called” concept album. John Darnielle: You know, I make all my decisions to change very slowly. | j kellyĪquarium Drunkard: What made you decide to do a rock opera? All hail indeed, here’s the Mountain Goats interview. Demento, and was a total joy all the way through. He touched, with equal fervor, on Aeschylus and Dr. He is as articulate and well-read as rock stars come, talking mostly in full, well-arranged sentences, but also prone to peripheral observations that zing in from unexpected angles. It is a lot, as is talking to Darnielle himself. The album is also loosely based on the Greek tragedy Seven from Thebes and sonically overstuffed enough to keep your average Broadway pit orchestra challenged and happy. It builds a rock opera out of the story of Jenny from All Hail West Texas, continuing her trajectory from safe house proprietor to murderer on the loose. His latest album, Jenny from Thebes, draws on that love of theater, as well as a cast of characters first brought to life two decades ago. When we talked, he was planning to take his kids to Wicked. He’s been a fan since preschool, listening and relistening to original cast recordings of both traditional and non-traditional musicals-everything from the Music Man to the Rocky Horror Picture Show. The portrait of two songwriters from very different worlds likely surprised long-time fans of each, but it wouldn’t phase anyone who’s ever asked John Darnielle about musicals. And next week, the company plans to take four paying customers on a flight to the International Space Station, which orbits about 200 miles above Earth.īlue Origin does have plans to build a rocket powerful enough to reach orbit, called the New Glenn. The company completed the first-ever all-civilian flight to orbit last September, taking a billionaire and three of his chosen crewmates on a three-day trip. SpaceX is the only private company that offers trips to orbit. Strahan wrote a message for the passengers on Thursday’s flight that was read to them by ground control: “This is the best ride you will ever have, but it’s way too short.” Since then, Blue Origin made headlines for flying other well-known names on two subsequent flights, including Star Trek star William Shatner and Good Morning America host Michael Strahan. From building cheaper rockets and designing new uses for satellites to imagining futuristic space hotels, the industry has attracted record levels of investment, according to data collected by analytics firm Space Capital.Īfter years of quiet development, Blue Origin’s space tourism rocket made its crewed launch debut last year with Bezos, flying alongside a heroine of the space community, Wally Funk, as well as his brother Mark Bezos and a paying customer. “Pictures don’t do it justice,” he added.īusiness activity in space - largely led by SpaceX - is booming. Other passengers on the livestream described the view as “incredible.” “I did feel a little bit nauseous, for sure.” “It was intense, and I did get a little bit of a feeling of vertigo,” Lai told Blue Origin’s Sarah Knights, who heads communications with the passengers during flight. On the livestream, the passengers could be heard cheering as the capsule made its touchdown, and moments later, they exited the capsule, smiling and waving. The passengers’ New Shepard capsule, which is fully autonomous, deployed plumes of parachutes after diving back into the thickest part of the Earth’s atmosphere and landed with a puff of sand in the Texas desert. Lai’s crewmates included Marty Allen, an investor and the former CEO of a party supply store Jim Kitchen, an entrepreneur and business professor George Nield, a former associate administrator for the Federal Aviation Administration Office of Commercial Space Transportation Marc Hagle, an Orlando real estate developer, and his wife, Sharon Hagle, who founded a space-focused nonprofit. Gary Lai, who has been with Blue Origin for 18 years and holds several patents related to the New Shepard rocket’s design, flew in Davidson’s place and was the sole non-paying customer on the flight. The company cited the need for additional ground tests on the New Shepard rocket as the reason for the delay. This flight had been slated to include Saturday Night Live star Pete Davidson, but he dropped out of the mission after Blue Origin announced a schedule change earlier this month. It includes Marty Allen, Sharon Hagle, Marc Hagle, Jim Kitchen, Gary Lai, and Dr. Blue Origin is conducting its fourth human spaceflight on Thursday, March 31. |
